Genesee Speedway Celebrated Night of Champions

By: Steven Petty

BATAVIA, NY… The Genesee Speedway celebrated their Night of Champions at Batavia Downs Gaming on Saturday night. The speedway recognized those who finished in the top of each division while thanking all of those who helped kept the track running week in and week out throughout the 2009 racing season. The awards portion of the program were led by Kenny Hangauer Jr, Mike Paz, and Steven Petty.

The Troyer Engineering DIRTcar Sportsman champion Brian Sage collected his seventh championship trophy along with the Lauterborn Electric Sprint Cars Rookie of the Year. Sage, from Brockport won eight times on the 1/3rd mile oval on the historic Genesee County Fairgrounds, while having 13 top five finishes as well as 17 top ten finishes in the Sportsman. For Sage in the Sprint Cars, two victories, 14 top fives and 15 top tens.

The Original Pizza Logs Late Models had a competitive season between champion Jon Rivers and defending division champ Dave DuBois. Rivers, from Basom graced victory lane five times while finishing in the top five 14 times along with 17 top ten finishes. Rivers won the points champion by a slim four point margin over Dave “the Outlaw” DuBois who won five times but had 15 top fives and 17 top tens.

Churchville, NY resident Josh Smallidge won only two times but his 16 top five performances gave him his first Lauterborn Electric Street Stocks championship.

Dan Norton won ten times to give him the championship in the Mini Stock division.

Dave Ferguson won once in the four race mini series for the 600cc Sprint Cars to give him the title over John Smith and Timex Morgan.

Rookies of the Year awards were awarded to Jim Maier in the Mini Stock division. Maier had 16 top fives and 19 top ten finishes in his first season in the Mini Stock.

Jerry Harding Jr was the Rookie of the Year in the DIRTcar Sportsman class. Harding ran for the first time on dirt since the dirt days at the Perry Speedway (now Wyoming County International Speedway).

Corfu’s Nick Skeet was the Rookie of the Year in the Original Pizza Logs Late Model division.

The Jack Veach Memorial Award for dedication to auto racing was awarded to Mike Paz. Paz, who suffered a stroke early in the year, made a comeback to the speedway towards the end of the season and with his love for auto racing, was awarded with the Jack Veach Award. Jack was a longtime official at many speedways across Western New York and Southern Ontario and was a friend to many that knew him. Jack passed away a couple of years ago. His family including son John, daughter Dawn, wife Bonnie and their two grandchildren presented Paz with the award.

The special awards were handed out and the first award was presented to Ms Genesee Speedway Mary Walworth for her years of support to the racing at Genesee Speedway.

Dave Gleason was honored with the Keeper of the Gate Award for watching the gate between the grandstands and the pit area.

Former Pro Stock competitor Jim Bieber was awarded with the Man who Ran the Most Laps of the Season award for his service of driving the Ken Barrett Chevrolet Pace Car throughout the 2009 season.

Ted Griffin won the award for the Best Tuck and Roll for his spectacular dive off of a tow truck after a car flipped over during the season.

John Raniewzc, aka City Slicker, was honored for his dedication to the speedway. Raniewzc was always one of the last to leave the speedway after the night’s racing action and went above and beyond what was asked of him.

The speedway would like to thank all that attended the banquet along with supporting the speedway throughout the past three seasons. Genesee Speedway wishes everyone has a safe and joyous holiday season and many thanks of your patronage over the past many seasons.

Lauterborn buys Arcade track, leaves Genesee

SPECIAL TO THE BUFFALO NY NEWS

For the fourth consecutive year, when the green flag flies to open the 2010 local auto racing campaign, Arcade International Speedway will open with a new management team in place.

The Delevan based track will also undergo its third name change in as many years.

Mike Lauterborn, promoter at Genesee Speedway the last three years through a lease arrangement with the Genesee County Fair Board, is in the process of purchasing AIR and will move over to promote that speedway as soon as the paperwork is completed.

Lauterborn also is changing the facility's name from AIR to SOUTH ARCADE SPEEDWAY

Lauterborn made a down payment in mid-November to buy the track from racer Eldon King III. Lauterborn announced last summer that he would not renew his lease at Genesee, which expires Dec. 31.

In 2007, AIR, known then as Freedom Raceway, was owned and promoted by Dan Hoffmann, who had been at the helm there for 20 years.

After Hoffmann ran into financial woes, the track did not open for the 2008 season. King bought the property and leased the track to business partners Carl Drum and Shane Wolfer for the 2009 campaign. The track was then renamed Arcade International Speedway.

Drum left after just a few months, leaving Wolfer to operate AIR by himself. Lauterborn recently decided that he wanted to stay in the promoter's game by purchasing AIR.

As he will now be the owner, Lauterborn can make his own decisions. He feels that he is in a much better position at AIR than at Genesee as he no longer has to gain approval from a fair board to make changes.

"I now know that when I put a board up and put a nail in it that it's my wood and my nails and it's part of an investment," Lauterborn said. "I can set my own race dates and make all decisions here, and I only have to answer to myself. I got the track for a reasonable price and have a three-year plan for growth. As long as things turn out financially profitable I can reinvest every dime I make back in to the facility."

Lauterborn is already making moves at South Arcade, seeking a DIRTcar Northeast sanction. He will have the Crate Late Models, E-Mods, Open Sprint Cars, Street Stocks and 4-Cylinders as his weekly divisions while hosting specials for the 360 Late Models and 1000cc Mini Sprints.

John Kurban, Ron McLaud, Ken Hangauer Jr., Mike Paz, Mike Fisher, Amie Fox and John and Bonnie Veach are track officials already selected by Lauterborn to work at South Arcade.

No one has stepped forward to run Genesee and the track is in jeopardy of not racing next year.

DIRTcar SPORTSMAN:

’09 Genesee Speedway champion Brian Sage (8 wins) topped the Western Region points chart.

Talented teenager Chris Raabe remained at the top of his game as the defending overall Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman titlist posted a division-best total of 19 wins and collected track crowns at Can-Am Motorsports Park and Thunder Alley Speedpark to earn Northern Region accolades. Canandaigua/Cayuga County mainstay Steve Gray racked up six wins in the Central area while ’09 Genesee Speedway champion Brian Sage (8 wins) topped the Western Region points chart. An East Region was added to the mix this season with 4-time Glen Ridge Motorsports Park race winner Munson racking up the most points.

2009 MR. DIRTcar PRO STOCK CHAMPIONSHIP

PETE STEFANSKI

The newest overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock titlist to be crowned is the driver that accumulated the most points in the 9 extra-distance Championship Series events run as well as bonus points issued from DIRTcar Weekly Racing Series shows held during the regular season. This individual continued to raise the bar as his degree of dominance carried him to the top of the standings for an unmatched fourth consecutive year!

2009 marked the 15th season that DIRTcar Racing offered an overall Mr. DIRTcar title for the premier Pro Stockers yet it produced an ending the same as the past three. And for the fourth straight season it was PETE STEFANSKI reigning supreme as he captured the 9th tour title in the past 10 years for Western New York travelers. The return of Lebanon Valley Speedway to the full-fender fold along with the first-ever tour stop at Brockville Ontario Speedway added up to 9 championship events, providing plenty for Stefanski to get the job done although not quite enough for runner-up JOEY LADOUCEUR to garner high point honors for a second time even after leading flag-to-flag in the season-finale.

Despite splitting the majority of his weekend activity between Saturday night hangouts Canandaigua and Genesee speedways, Stefanski still remained on course to grab 7 checkered flags in the ‘Terrell’s Drivin’ Route 5’ mini-series and earn valuable bonus points toward his record-setting Mr. DIRT car title. The veteran from Wheatfield, N.Y. was just as successful in series competition aboard the no. 2 Sunrise Racing-SanTer Sewing-PJ NFB Auto Sales/Chevrolet Monte Carlo EMS entry, opening the tour with a last-lap victory at Genesee before winning with two to go at Mohawk Int’l Raceway then leading all 25 laps to add his first career triumph at the Syracuse Mile during Super DIRT Week.

While Stefanski started and finished the points trail on top, the title was never out of reach for his biggest rival Ladouceur who went on to score a tour best five victories and set fast time in 6 of the 8 events qualifying under the clocks. Ladouceur’s 3rd straight series win at Autodrome Edelweiss in September sliced the deficit to 9 points while a runner-up finish behind DON CARLSON the next night at Lebanon Valley provided the second-generation driver from Alexandria, Ontario with his first lead albeit just a single marker with 3 events still left to determine the final outcome.

Ladouceur extended his advantage to 11 points with a win over Carlson and Stefanski at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park to close out the month, yet even with a command performance in the first-ever trip to Brockville Ontario Speedway for the season-finale, Stefanski led from start to finish at Syracuse in October to regain his top spot as Ladouceur rallied for 15th following a early flat tire.

Our 2009 Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Champion ended the season with a total of 10 feature wins which ranked second only to Ladouceur who reached victory lane 15 times. Stefanski retained his position as DIRTcar Racing Northeast’s all-time career win leader with 88, with those three tour victories increasing his all-time Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Series count to 23 first-place trophies. This year the top-12 share in the point fund in excess of $7,000, with Stefanski taking home the lion’s share of $2 grand for an unprecedented fourth straight autumn!
