AUG 23....“Like A Rock”:  Spatorico, Walworth Continue Runs Toward Championships With Victories

Mike Paz, BATAVIA, NY (August 23, 2008) - With opportunities to earn points in each racing division fading away like the great summer weather, racing at Genesee Speedway took on a seriously competitive look on Ken Barrett Cadillac/Chevrolet night.

Racing in all classes was highly entertaining for the fans, especially in the Troyer Sportsman division.  Coming into the feature, the point lead was tied between Don Spatorico and John Venuto with Stubby Pangrazio just 6 points further back in third.  Spatorico served notice early in his heat race victory that he intended to stay up front in the points.

Steve Schumacher, also a heat winner, took the lead from his outside pole starting spot and led till the first caution on lap 5, brought out by Justin Wright for a tire down.  Schumacher held the lead from the restart but Spatorico got by on lap 6.  On the same lap, the yellow flew again for contact between Don Ogden and Guy Steffen.

On the restart, Spatorico pulled away from Schumacher with Pangrazio third and Venuto mired in the middle of the field.  Caution #3 came out on lap 7 for contact between Brady Fultz and Rob Richmond Jr., with Mike O’Brien forced to pit with a right front tire down.

By this time, Venuto had worked his way up to 6th while Pangrazio slipped to 4th; letting Brian Sage get by.  Yellow flag #4 waved on lap 10 for a solo spin by Guy Steffen in turn 1.  On the restart, Spatorico again had to drive away from Schumacher but Sage, who has had a strong car all season long, battled Schumacher, finally getting by on lap 14.  Defending division champ Rob Pratt then took up the challenge with Schumacher for third.  Sage wasn’t finished as he caught Spatorico and the two duked it out on the final two laps.  Spatorico was able to hold him off for the victory, with Schumacher salvaging a third, Pratt 4th and Venuto picking up the 5th spot just ahead of Pangrazio.

Spatorico was obviously very thrilled in Victory Lane, taking the time to make sure all of his sponsors got mentioned, along with his family and friends.  Thus, with one race left to go on the schedule, Spatorico is now leading the points with Venuto second and Pangrazio 3rd.

Just as they have all year long, the Power Trip Energy Drink Street Stocks put on another fantastic show.  Colton Chappius, Jr., the points leader coming into the feature, also notched a heat win, with Matt Pfalzer getting the other.  With Lee Zimmerman (second place in points) out for the rest of the year with a shoulder injury, young Jeb Walworth seized the opportunity to improve on his third place in points as he won the feature. Chappius started eighth in the feature, with Walworth further back in 12th.

Fans got an early taste of the kind of racing this class has put on all year long with a 3-wide battle in turn one just after the green flag.  John Giles (who inherited the pole after Darrel Moyer started tail) and Matt Pfalzer, who started third, made side-to-side contact in turn one while battling with outside pole sitter Steve Austin.  Austin and Jeremy Denton used the high side to sprint into first and second, with Dan Pries third.  Denton got by on the next lap with both Chappius Jr. and Walworth already working their way up to 4th and 5th respectively.

Pries moved to the high side on lap 3, taking the lead from Denton, bringing both Chappius, Jr. and Walworth with him.  Walworth battled Chappius, Jr. for 2nd in turn 3, diving down to the inside to take the position.  Those 3 cars fought until lap 8 when Walworth took the lead for good away from Pries.  With Walworth out front, Pries and Chappius, Jr. put on a “Battle Royale” the rest of the way.  These two drivers put on side-by-side but clean racing as they fought for the runner-up spot.  On lap 18, it was over:  as the two approached a lapped car, Chappius, Jr. got hung up behind the backmarker, allowing Pries to pull away.  With Walworth getting his 4th feature victory of the year (tying him with both Zimmerman and Chappius, Jr.), he made up some ground in the points.

In the PDI Mini-Stock division, it was apparent from the heats that Jason Hull had the car to beat.  Starting from the outside of row 1 in the feature, Hull took the lead in turn one and led flag-to-flag--but not without some serious competition from Brandon Aradine.  Aradine and Dan Norton came into the evening tied for the point lead, with Aradine starting 3rd in the feature and Norton relegated to an 8th starting spot.  Aradine got by pole sitter Ed Neal on lap 4 and tried to track down Hull.  Hull stayed strong in the lead until lap 10 when the yellow flew for contact between Neal and Bobby Dickinson.  From the restart, Aradine challenged Hull whenever the opportunity presented itself but was never able to get completely by.  Norton worked his way through the field to finish 3rd to keep pace with Aradine, the new points leader.

With the Original Pizza Logs Pro Stocks having the night off, Genesee Speedway welcomed back the Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club.  Providing a blend of nostalgia and speed, a total of 16 cars raced in two 15-lap features.  The club awards finishes in 3 divisions:  Hobby, Sportsman and Modified.  DIRT Hall of Fame member Gordie “The Dude” Wood from Waterloo brought his 1936 Plymouth home for the win in the “Hobby” class. Woodhull’s Bob Williams got the overall and Sportsman win in his 1937 Chevy, ending a 6-race winning streak for Matt Scott, driving the #25 former Doc Smith 1937 Chevy.  The Modified feature was won by Romulus’ Leo Kuleszo, holding off Mahopac’s Rob Casti in his 1937 Plymouth.

Two “red flag” situations spoiled the 20-lap feature for the Castle Chemicals Late Models.  Bob Babbitt, sporting new graphics on his #2, took the lead from the pole.  On lap 2, the first red flag came out for a multi-car pileup in turns 1&2, involving J.J. Mazur, Justin Chaddock, Pete Waldron and Jon Rivers (2nd place in points coming into the race).  Getting through unscathed was points leader Dave Dubois, along with Billy Burd, Tim Kauffman and Ron Mogavero, among others.

Babbit would hold the lead until another big wreck in turn 4 on lap 5.  This one again involved Rivers, along with Burd, Chaddock, Jason Bridge, Terry Pangrazio and Jason Hallett.  Rivers pitted to fix the damage, while Chaddock and Pangrazio were brought into the pits via the wrecker.

From the lap 6 restart, Babbitt would hold the lead over Dave Dubois and Billy Burd until the yellow flew again on lap 11 when Billy Burd found the turn 4 walls.  While under caution, Babbit’s left front went down, forcing him to pit.  That left the lead to Dubois, who went on to his 3rd feature win of the season and maintained the division point lead.  J.J. Mazur recovered to finish 2nd but Rivers averted a huge points deficit by salvaging a 3rd place finish with a badly battered racing machine.

DML Driveway Sealing Bandits class points leader Tom Urban led flag-to-flag for his 2nd win of the year.

AUGUST 9TH

J.J. Mazur and Pat Powers Snag Genesee Wins Before Rain

Russ Prentice Memorial

RAIN AFTER THE MINI STOCK FEATURE

 PAT POWERS

Rich Vleck, BATAVIA, NY, (August 9, 2008)- The Genesee Speedway expected rain on Saturday, just not as early as it arrived.

A pair of showers hit the Genesee Speedway on Saturday Evening, the first set the start back two hours, the next one threw it out the rest of the night.

The completion of the Castle Powered Late Model Feature from a week earlier and the Professional Driver Institute Mini Stock Features were the only events that would be completed on Totem Pole Smoke Shop and Gas Night.

After the first shower hit the track just before the posted starting time, the decision was made to run a features only format, scratching the heats for the evening.  The drivers were given an opportunity to run hot laps to help work the track in.

The first feature out was the Late Model event.  Last week, it took 30 minutes to run six laps.  This week the final 14 circuits would take a mere five minutes.

J.J. Mazur, who took the lead just before the postponement of the feature, took off on the restart and checked out on the pack for his second win of the season.

“After that first win, we couldn’t get ourselves out of a hole,” said Mazur.  “We were in the top and the middle groove most of the race, but really you could put it anywhere.”

The Batavia youngster had was able to drive away from his buddy Ron Mogavero, who was able to card his best finish of the season, holding off a fast Jason Boyle for second.

Justin Chaddock was fast on the cushion but would struggle to make forward progress, as he would finish in fourth.  Dave DuBois would round out the top-five to strengthen his point lead.

The PDI Trucking School Mini Stock Feature was off to a fast start, with Mike Sweeney moving around Pat Powers on the second lap and strengthening his advantage.  After a lap 7 caution for point leader Brandon Aradine though, Powers would make a pass on the restart and would lead until the final caution on the night, which would fall for rain.  The checkered flag would also be displayed at that point.

It was the first win this year for Powers, of Dale, the seventh different driver to score a victory in the highly competitive division.

Mike Sweeney would place in second, with youngster Dylan Cecee third.  Dan Norton and Samantha Burch would complete the top-five.

As the caution and checkered fell in the mini stock feature, a massive thunderstorm would move in and cancel the remainder of the cards.  With less than half of the program completed, ticket and pit stubs will be honored next weekend.  For more information, visit www.GeneseeSpeedway.com.

Greg Mrzywka Picks Up First Win of 2008 at Genesee Speedway

Rich Vleck, BATAVIA, NY (August 2, 2008)- Once again on a Saturday, the storm clouds found a detour around Genesee County and allowed racing to get in.  The end result would be the largest car count in years and a night to remember a great ambassador of racing.

With the white flag flying in the Troyer Chassis Sportsman, there were still four drivers that had a chance to easily lead the next time around; as it would turn out, consistency would be the way for Greg Mrzywka to get to Victory Lane.

Mrzywka, of Holley, took the lead from rookie Henry Maier on lap five and did the job holding off past champions Brian Sage and Rob Pratt for the win.

On the races final restart, Pratt moved from fourth to second and began to pressure the No. 04 of Mrzywka.  Pratt nearly lost control of his No. p38 in turn two though and would give the leader just enough room to hold on.

It was Greg’s first win since 2006 at the 1/3-mile.  He would also become the seventh different winner in the division this season.

Pratt would hang on for second, with Brian Sage, who was so fast early on, slipping to third.  Rounding out the top-five would be Stubby Pangrazio and Don Spatorico, the top two in points.

The Castle Powered Late Models simply could not get into a rhythm in their feature, with six cautions falling in the first six laps.  In an effort to allow the solid field to regroup, the decision was made to send the cars to the pits to run at the end of the night.  As it would turn out, the hard 11:00 p.m. curfew would end up postponing the event until August 9th, when the race will be completed.  J.J. Mazur had taken the lead just before the final caution.

 MIKE AND JIM

Jeb Walworth inherited the lead in the Power Trip Energy Drink Street Stock Feature on lap 7 when Nathan Arnold took his car pit side.  He would stretch out his advantage and cruise to his second win of the year.

Walworth survived a number of challenges to defeat Colton Chappius Jr., Lee Zimmerman, Matthew Pfalzer and Jason Babbit.

Russ Wassner shook off the bad luck of 2008 by picking up the first win in the Professional Driver Institute Mini Stock Feature.

Wassner took the lead on lap three from Mike Sweeney and held him off on the race’s only restart on lap 9.  He would pull away in the closing laps to continue his streak of winning seasons.

Behind Wassner was Sweeney, Dan Norton, Rick Johnson and point leader Brandon Aradine.

P.J. Havens became the eighth different winner in the DML Driveway Sealing Division, taking the lead early and winning the final event of the night over James Maier and Tom Urban.

Stefanski Cops Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Series Veach Memorial At Genesee

Dramatic Last Lap Pass Extends Points Lead For 2-Time Defending Tour Champ

Batavia, NY – August 2, 2008 –

By Tom Skibinski, DIRTcar Racing NorthEast PR Director

Round three of the Hoosier Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Championship Series at Genesee Speedway came down to a regular Saturday night shootout between track point leaders Pete Stefanski and Mike Martin. But on this night it was anything but normal as the second and final lead change came with the checkered flag in hand and the leaders trading paint all the way home in the extended 35-lap full-fender finale.

Just like it started, Stefanski led the last trip around ---although Martin paced every lap in between--- in dramatic fashion to cop the 35-lap Jack Veach Memorial presented by the American Cancer Society, with Martin clinging to second only a few feet behind the winning Sunrise Racing no. 2 San Ter Sewing-Sunrise II Sport Fishing-PJ NFB Auto Sales Chevrolet Monte Carlo entry.

“Mike’s been fast all year and he’s definitely a guy to beat here,” said Stefanski, who turns 38 on Tuesday, following his last lap heroics that netted the Wheatfield, New York driver the $1,000 top prize and increased his lead further in the overall Mr. DIRTcar standings through three of 12 races. “We were better on the green flag laps, we kept getting our nose in there.”

“When you’re gonna leave the door open and kinda come down, there’s a little bit of rubbing but I think I got him on that last corner. I didn’t really move him out of the way too much. I could’ve moved him up sooner but we were consistent with the green laps and just kept working on him,” remarked Stefanski, after posting his first series win of the season to push his career total to 15 and leave him second on the all-time list behind only three-time Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Champion Jipp Ortiz with 17 career tour triumphs.

Steering a former Stefanski ride to finish third was Steve Lewis in owner Brett Martin’s (Mike’s son) no. 2m machine, while Genesee standout Eric Greenlief and Frenchman Denis Gauvreau filled out the final front-five.

Running one-two on the Genesee points chart entering the final month of their title run at the Batavia, New York oval, heat winner Stefanski and Martin sandwiched Canadian invader Gauvreau in the second of three qualifying races. The pre-race draw offered little relief for the top tour travelers as the hometrack heroes selected the top two spots to head the 23-car starting grid.

While Stefanski jumped out early from his pole-position start, Martin bolted past on the second circuit to leave his closest pursuer feeding on the bottom the remainder of the way. With eight caution periods slowing the pace of the race, Martin wavered only once, and that was all the two-time reigning Mr. DIRTcar points king needed to duck under in turn one on the last circuit and pull away for a scant half car-length victory in the closest series race of the season in any division.

“Mike’s a good competitor and I’m sure we’ll be doing this for the rest of the series races,” noted Stefanski, who remains in search of an unprecedented third consecutive Mr. DIRTcar points crown, a feat that no driver in any class has ever pulled off since the nationally recognized organization was established in 1976. “The track was in pretty decent shape tonight, a little bumpy, but you could race on it if you were patient.”

“Some of the guys behind having a bad night definitely helps because we’re gonna have one sometime too, we just take the series races one at a time. What you get is what you get, the end result is gonna be it no matter how hard you try point racing. To come out with a win, our first series race of the season, it certainly helps with momentum. It means even more to me and my family winning on Jack Veach night, we all wish he was still here,” added Stefanski, who has won three of the past four series races at Genesee, including the last one staged in 2006.

As content as Stefanski was with his fifth victory of the season at Genesee, Martin was as disappointed after leading all but two times around in his potent red no. 99 BDK Construction-Able Auto Insurance-Basket Factory/Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

“We had a really good car tonight, just got lifted off the track a little bit there at the end but that’s racing I guess,” figured a dejected Martin, who already captured three feature wins this year at Genesee, yet was geared up for his first career victory in DIRTcar Racing NorthEast’s premier full-fender division right up until the last lap miscue. “The track was real choppy so I just tried to stay on the bottom and take it easy through the corners.”

“We tried ….. we had a good car, a fast one, and passed (Pete) on the top early in the race so we definitely thought we had a car that could win tonight. We’re a little disappointed with the outcome. He didn’t turn me around so I guess I can appreciate the fact that that didn’t happen. Pete’s a good racer, he could’ve taken me out and he didn’t. We were running pretty hard but the track was so choppy, we were just bouncing around all over the place and it was hard to get a hold of the track. We did the best we could, we came out of here with second and with all these top quality drivers we shouldn’t be ashamed of our run tonight,” Martin said.

While Martin and Stefanski led the Pro Stock parade most of the way, tour invader Louie Jackson tried his best to break up their party. The ’06 Syracuse Super DIRT Week winner and ’08 tour opener victor at Can-Am Motorsports Park charged from ninth to third after just a handful of circuits, with the Holley Hard Luck award recipient eventually blasting past Stefanski and setting his sights on Martin until a ball joint failed on lap 28 sent Jackson pitside for the remainder of the night.

Claiming two wins this season at Genesee and winner of round two of the ’08 Mr. DIRTcar Championship trail at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park on July 3, Don Barnes was never a factor as a pair of broken front shocks kept him exactly where he started (7th) and solidified his fifth-place rank in the current standings.

Traveling teams return to competition in the 2008 Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Series, with Autodrome Drummond hosting its first ever tour event on Saturday, August 23.

Gordy Button A First Time ASCS Patriot Winner at Genesee

Rich Vleck, BATAVIA, NY (July 26, 2008)- Twenty-one years after his first trip to Genesee Speedway, and nine years since his last sprint win, Gordy Button did not “Panic”, as he stayed smooth and steady through a grueling 25-lap feature for his first win this millennia.

Button, of Kirkville, NY, scored only his second win in the last twenty years, taking the lead back from Bryan Howland on a lap 23 restart and hold off fierce advances by Chuck Hebing and Scott Kreutter to win in just his second ASCS Patriot start in the last four years.

The sprint car veteran started on the pole by virtue of the driver handicap redraw and used it to his advantage, leading the pack through traffic in the early stages.  On lap 15, Bryan Howland moved underneath Button and began to put distance on the No. 714.  Once again, Gordy did not hit the “Panic Button” and got fortunate with six laps remaining.

Howland’s two-second lead disinigrated on lap 19, when the left rear shock dismounted on his No. 51, drastically upsetting the car.  The point leader looked like he might be able to hold on to the lead to the end, but the races first caution on lap 22 would drastically alter that.

When the green flag came back out, Button swung around the youngster, who was less than a year old the last time he Button was at Genesee, bringing Scott Kreutter with him.

“Bryan was really strong, I’m not sure we would have caught him without his problems,” noted a jubilated Button in Victory Lane.  “I could see his frame dragging on the track so I knew I had to get him on the restart.”

With the white flag out, Button was hitting his final marks before his first Patriot win when Bubba Broderick spun out of sixth place.  The result would be a one-lap thriller.

With the green and white flags waving simultaneously, Chuck Hebing, who was in fifth for much of the event, pulled alongside Scott Kreutter on the top of turn two and made it a three car battle in the final set of corners.  As Button drifted up high though, it was Kreutter who attempted the bonsai move, narrowly avoiding contact.  It was just enough space to give Button a clear lane back to the checkered flags.

“I kept seeing that yellow wing peak underneath me, and I couldn’t figure out who he was, but he was strong,” said Button in Victory Lane, recollecting not only the final lap, but a half-dozen laps in the second-half of the race while battling for second.  “He sure made it interesting in the final corner.”

Despite being one of the “Original Patriots”, this was the first win under ASCS Patriot sanctioning for Button, who claimed the 1st Annual Bill Alhart Memorial, remembering Track Promoter Mike Lauterborn’s former Crew Chief and Race Director.

Kreutter’s last-ditch effort at his first career win would send his No. 52 up the track, allowing Chuck Hebing to slide by and take away the runner-up spot at the line.  Both of those drivers were runner-up finishers in their respective National Parts Peddler Heat races, but able to rebound when it counted.

Kyle Moffit would pick up the KSE Hard Charger on his way to a fourth place showing.  Moffit was also the winner of the Four Laps of Fame Scramble Dash.

Howland’s broken shock would see him fade back to round out the top-five.  Had the late cautions not waved, the Auburn, NY resident might have held on for his third straight win.

Jared Zimbardi won his heat and ran up to sixth, with Chris Muhleisen, Brad Knab, Ray Preston and Mike Stelter rounding out the top-10.

Twenty-one cars were on hand on what early on was an ominous summer night.  A terrific race surface was presented to the competitors, with the quickest time of the night laid down by Jared Zimbardi at 15.02 seconds, more than three seconds faster than the quickest lap recorded last year when time trials were held.

Justin Chaddock went back-to-back in the Castle Powered Late Model Feature, taking the lead on lap three and holding off a fierce challenge from point leader Dave DuBois to capture the win.

After a myriad of problems getting the race underway, Chaddock was able to put some distance on the rest of the pack in his Cadillac No. 122.

As the laps began to wind down, DuBois began to make his characteristic charge towards the lead.  With three laps left to go, he made a bid for the top spot underneath Chaddock in turn one, but when he got pinched he spun the No. 012, giving the green and yellow No. 122 all the room he needed.

As Chaddock drove away to his second win, Dave DuBois would stay in the throttle and salvage a potentially disastrous point night, finishing sixth.

Jon Rivers would inherit second after the incident for the lead and hang on to it.  Pete Waldron, JJ Mazur and Tom Baker would round out the top-five.

Brian Sage didn’t mind the Troyer Sportsman feature not being a points race, as he charged to the front all night long and scored his third win of the year in the Troyer No. 2.

Sage took the lead on the second lap from Justin Wright and then held him off on a number of restarts to put distance over the rest of the pack to pick up both the feature and the dash win.

Justin Wright led early on and held on for second with Rob Richmond Jr. winning a fierce battle for third.  Ricky Newton and John Venuto would complete the top-five.

Colton Chappius crossed underneath the checkered flag first in the Power Trip Energy Drink Street Stock Feature, but after a video review, it was determined he was responsible for a spin that took Dave Downs out of the lead, thus giving the win to Lee Zimmerman.

Zimmerman parked his No. 71z in Victory Lane with a flat right rear, as well as radiator problems.  Dave Downs would rebound from the spin to finish in second, with Chappius being placed third.  Rounding out the top-five was Mark Loveland and Jeremy Denton.

Alan Kemp appeared to score his first Professional Driver Institute Mini Stock win in his No. 17, but a engine infraction would hand the win to Mark Forsha.

Kemp was steady on the bottom of the track, forcing any and all invaders to pass him on the top of the track, something they were unable to do.
