Batavia, NY—September 12, 2007--By: Chris Rhynold, Media/Racer Relations Director
One of the most popular nights of the year at Genesee Speedway is just a couple days away. The 100 lap season finale enduro is upon us as well as the Street Stock and Mini Stock “Run Whatcha Brung” Night.
The Enduro will consist of 4, 6, and 8 cylinder cars combined and this year mini vans will be allowed to participate in the event. The purse is open as of right now and will be adjusted depending on the car count.
The Street Stock and Mini Stock classes will enjoy a “Run Whatcha Brung” no holds barred night. See some pretty wild stuff as racers try sail panels, spoilers and all the illegal stuff you can’t run during the season. Fastway Fabrication has put up a $100 dollar bonus to the winning street stock that can beat last years street stock winner Lee Zimmerman.

Find out who won the Lucas Oil Shootout race for 358 Modifieds from the Genesee Speedway Saturday night in my Post Race Report. It was a tough luck situation for the leader late in the event as his bad luck provided the opportunity for one driver to get his first ever Modified win. running time - 2:13
Rick Richner
remembered his Genesee track championships and a
scary moment Friday night.
Scott Wood talked about his win at this
track last year and about his Merrittville
successes.
Fred Carleton described the trouble he is
having with his new Modified and the need to be
tighter.
Tim Jones looked back at his past in
Batavia and wondered if it would help him later
on.
Scott Kerwin told me about Friday night
and his desire to get better on slick racing
surfaces.
Jon Miller chatted about some recent
changes and wondered if they would work later in
the night.
Don Barnes explained how a recent
conversation helped him start a two race winning
streak.
After the heat races
Scott Kerwin told me why he would make no
changes to the car he won Modified heat one
with.
Pete Cosco won the second Modified
qualifying heat race and talked about his
excellent crew.
Tim Jones went to the outside to win his
qualifying heat and told me when he first
thought of it.
Josh Pangrazio talked about earning his
first ever heat win in the 360 Late Model
division.
After the features
Tim Jones told me about his first ever
Modified win and a problem he had at about lap
fifteen.
Jeff McGinnis talked about his runner up
finish and what the mid-race track watering did
to help.
Scott Kerwin made a last lap move for the
lead, lost second and told me about coming home
third.
Adam Ferri passed thirteen cars to finish
fourth and talked about his adventure filled
evening.
Fred Carleton explained why he was so
happy about finishing fifth in the Lucas Oil
Shootout.
Last night I took a drive west on the New York
State Thruway to check out some racing at a
track I had only been to once before. Genesee
Speedway was hosting a Lucas Oil Shootout
race for 358 Modifieds, so I decided to come on
out and see my first race there since 1996. Kent
Peckham won that night. (Thanks Chuck!) The
facility had changed a lot as far as I could
remember, but then again my memory is not the
best. Big thanks to everyone for making my visit
so much fun. I had a badge to wear around the
pit area and everything. It made me feel like a
VIP. I also saw a lot of faces that I normally
see at Merrittville and Ransomville. I did not
know there was that much crossover between those
tracks and Genesee, but I guess basic geography
has a lot to do with that too.
I got there nice and early and had the chance to
chat with a lot of drivers that I don’t see too
much and others that I only talked to for the
first time. The pit area is real big and I love
the remains of the old train station off of turn
one. It makes you think back to a time long ago.
I took some pictures of it and tried to get
artsy, but I’m not that good at it. Check them
out as well as driver pics, on track photos and
all the other places I wandered to along the way
in my latest photo bin. Click on Tim Jones
and his number 15 Modified to take the tour with
me! I watched most of the races from high atop
the tower and chatted with the videographer for
the event and Dirt Track Digest’s Tom Ames.
They filled me in on some background info as we
enjoyed the racing action.
There are a lot of positive things that I saw
Saturday night at Genesee Speedway. You know me,
I look for different things and sometimes can
overanalyze a bit, but I saw a lot of real good
things. The fan support on an always tough
graduation weekend Saturday night was pretty
good and they were very enthusiastic and having
fun. The layout of the facility is very good as
the concessions, bathrooms and pit entrance are
all centrally located. There were a lot of young
people and they were eating ice cream, playing
behind the grandstand and chatting in large
groups. That is something you don’t see a lot of
and it speaks well for the future of this track.
The food was excellent and they were quick about
getting it to you. I also noticed that some
things were cheaper in the pits than they were
in the grandstand. Bottled water was a dollar in
the pits. Great! Give the folks over there a
break. I love that. Sure, clay is needed for
this track but from what I can tell, everything
else is in place. I had a lot of fun and loved
the atmosphere. I left there imagining the
potential for this track down the road. Plus,
they have some nice areas around them to draw
from and Batavia, New York is a beautiful place.
I even took a picture as I drove down Main
Street. I’ll see you guys again.
“The Boys are Back in Town” – Lucas Oil 358 Shootout is coming to town.
Batavia, NY—June 20, 2007--By: Chris Rhynold, Media/Racer Relations Director
After his round one win at Ransomville Speedway, Scott Kerwin is looking to extend his points lead when the Lucas Oil Shootout 358 Modified Series comes to town this Saturday. Other modified drivers such as defending champion Scott Wood and “Mr Smallblock” Pete Bicknell are looking to pounce and take the lead away from Kerwin. Also, don’t count out guys like Chad Brachmann, Adam Ferri, Larry Lampman, Jeff McGinnis, Robbie Krull and Kevin Wills who are always strong runners. Also added to the mix is the opportunity for some of the hometown sportsman regulars to mix it up with the 358’s as the Troyer Race Cars Sportsman Division has the night off.
This week will see double features for the Greenlief’s Restaurant Pro Stocks as the feature from last week was postponed due to time issues. Genesee Speedway has also added $25 to each position for the qualified drivers from last week for the make-up feature.
“Boy Wonder” Jeb Walworth is on a hot streak. Walworth has scored his 3rd consecutive Bobcat of Buffalo Street Stock Division feature. Although the Churchville native has been on a hot streak he must stay focused and consistent as 2nd place runner Joey Spicola is a mere 4 points behind Walworth.
Jim Johnson made his way back to victory lane at Genesee Speedway in the BDK Construction 360 Late Model Division after a couple of tough weeks. The 360 Late Models ran one of their better races this past week and we hope to see this trend continue. Although Johnson had a couple of bad weeks he still holds the points lead over Bob Babbitt by 14 points.
Bobby Dickinson made his first 2007 appearance in victory lane this past week in his new ride in the Dickinson’s Auto Service Mini Stocks. Dickinson currently sits 6th in points, 40 points back from the leader but if he shows any kind of dominance like he did last Saturday it will take no time for him to be in the battle for the lead. Only 10 points separates the top 3 of Russ Wassner, Ken Hixenbaugh and Dan Norton.
Don’t forget to stop by the All New Souvenir Booth located behind the main tower to pick up your souvenir program and Genesee Speedway apparel.
Pit Gates open at 4pm, Grandstand opens at 5pm, Green Flag drops at 6pm. For race day information call the speedway at 585-343-1076.

Pratt/Avery Racing Team and fans of Genesee Speedway raise money for Dream Factory.
Batavia, NY—June. 11, 2007--By: Chris Rhynold, Media/Racer Relations Director
Ma Pratt and the Pratt/Avery Racing Team would like to thank the track and the fans of Genesee Speedway for their participation in the draws to help aid the Dream Factory of Rochester.
Pratt/Avery Racing donated a bicycle to be given away and Mulligan’s Bar donated a Dale Earnhardt Jr. hood and car to give away.
Ma Pratt and the crew collected over $500 to donate to the Dream Factory.
Way to go fans of Genesee Speedway!! This donation will surely make a childs dream come true.
The Dream Factory, Inc. was founded in 1980 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, by Charles Henault, a South Central Bell employee, who wanted to create a volunteer organization dedicated to granting the dreams of children with critical or chronic illnesses.
Currently, there are more than 30 chapters across the United States with over 5,000 volunteers who work to produce and deliver dreams, visit children and their families in the hospital and their homes, arrange special celebrations and conduct fundraising events for individual children. This volunteer support ensures that the maximum percentage of donations are used for the procurement and distribution of dreams.
Jim Johnson, right, has been strengthened by the financial backing of car owner Jim Pfalzer.
If someone is reading this story about driver Jim Johnson and automatically believes it is about the defending NASCAR Nextel Cup champion, think again. Veteran local dirt track fans know there is another champion with that same name. He hails from Oakfield and is the defending Genesee Speedway Late Model/Super Stock titleholder.
Johnson continued his perfect season at Genesee on Saturday, winning for the fourth consecutive week to begin the Batavia-based oval’s season. Johnson, who had five Genesee victories in 2006, is well on the way to securing his fifth Genesee title.
“It’s funny that for a lot of new fans who only know NASCAR, they sometimes think I’m the Jimmie Johnson who races with Hendrick Motorsports,” Johnson said. “One day at our business a call came in and the person wanted to know when I would get back from Daytona.”
The high banks of the famous superspeedway and the glamour of the Daytona 500 are far removed from this Johnson’s world. But when it comes to slinging a Late Model/Super Stock in broadsliding fashion through the turns of a tight dirt-surfaced bull ring, few are better at their craft.
“People look at the way I win now and think it has always been this way for me,” said Johnson, 39. “I got married in 1988 and started racing Street Stocks at Genesee in 1989 and 1990. Then I moved to Super Stocks. From the time I started driving it took me seven years to win my first feature race.”
Johnson had always driven his own race cars, but at the end of last season he sold his car to Jim Pfalzer and drives it for him. Johnson still owns the Ford-powered 356 cubic inch engine. Getting acquainted with a different chassis manufacturer has been a challenge for Johnson, who won Genesee championships in 1999, 2001, 2003 and 2006.
“This is my third year with my new Larry Shaw-built car,” Johnson said. “I raced Rocket Chassis before, and I just started getting comfortable with the Shaw car about halfway through last season. It’s amazing how different the Shaw chassis is to drive compared to the Rocket.”
With the added funding brought to the team by Pfalzer, Johnson has the financial resources to run the entire Genesee schedule and for the first time can also make a full-time assault on trying to win the traveling BRP Can-Am 360 Late Model Series championship.
“It was hit and miss on the BRP tour the last few seasons, but with Jim’s help I can now run the full BRP tour because his financial help makes it possible,” said Johnson. “Jim really wants to chase the BRP schedule, so that’s what we’re going to do.”
Johnson’s car number, 93J, has significance as those numbers are the police badge numbers of his father- in-law, Duane Scroger, a retired Genesee County special deputy. The J was added by Johnson.
Why is it Johnson is so successful wherever he runs, especially Genesee?
“Racing is 50 percent preparation and 50 percent luck,” believes Johnson. “I’ve raced for many seasons at Genesee and know the track real well.”
Pit stops
• Little Valley Speedway may have consecutive days of Super Late Model racing in early September. Its season opener was rained out Sunday, and the rain date is tentatively set for Sept. 7, one night before the previously scheduled WNY Super Late Model Special.
• Lake Erie Speedway’s seasonopening MAARA Late Model 100, which was washed out Saturday, will get the green flag Sept. 15. Lake Erie will open its season with a weekly show this Saturday.
• Erick Rudolph not only won on the dirt this weekend in a 600cc Sprint Car at Freedom Raceway, but he also took the checkered flag on the asphalt, winning the opening- day SST Sportsman race at Wyoming County International Speedway.
• Curtis Friesen won a very special event at Holland Speedway when he was victorious in the Ralph Wissing Memorial for the Casey’s TQ Midget Series. Charlie DiRosa and Justin Mapes had a hard accident during the 20-lapper, with Mapes rolling his machine in the first turn. Neither man was injured.
• Dean McConnaughey of Strykersville is a rookie in the Casey’s series and is just 14 years old. Camden Barber has taken over the seat of the Harry Macy-owned No. 9 TQ Midget.

Genesee Speedway loses season opener to mother nature.
Batavia, NY—APRIL 29, 2007--By: Chris Rhynold, Media/Racer Relations Director
Genesee Speedway staff did everything they could to try and save the racing surface in an effort to try and get the season opener in but when the skies opened up at 5:35pm all efforts were lost and the speedway decided to call the night. The weather forecast called for only a 30% chance of rain and there was only a real light mist all day and the forecast predicted that the rain cell would be out of the area around 4 pm. The cell moved out around 4:15pm but was followed by another cell that carried more than a light drizzle.
“Boy, did the weatherman feed us with the wrong information today” stated Genesee Speedway Promoter Mike Lauterborn. Lauterborn kept the track prep crew busy by keeping the packers on the track doing laps for about an hour to keep the surface from getting away but rains got heavy enough that they couldn’t keep the surface race ready.
Although the weather was not the greatest, seventy-one (71) cars were in the pits and ready for battle and five (5) cars were in the parking lot waiting to come in when the plug was pulled on the program.
May 5th will open the season for Genesee Speedway when Mike Ognibene Ford and Select Collision present the 5 Star Program along with Driver Meet ‘n’ Greet and Pace Car Rides. Pit Gates open at 4pm, Grandstand opens at 5pm and racing gets under way at 6pm.

Chilly weather didn’t keep fans and racers away from Genesee Speedway’s first practice date of 2007.
Batavia, NY—April 15, 2007--By: Chris Rhynold, Media/Racer Relations Director
Genesee Speedway opened the 2007 racing season with a practice date on April 14th. Earlier in the day it was thought that the day may bring low car counts because of the chilly weather, but the weather did not play a factor as many fans passed through the spectator gates to see the cars of Genesee Speedway practice. Forty-Nine cars passed through the pit gate to have their technical inspection done by the speedway staff and to take practice laps on a nicely prepared track.
The Troyer Race Cars Sportsman division and the BDK Construction 360 Late Model division had the most support from the racers. 360 Late Model racer and former track champion Jim Johnson turned in the fastest lap of the day in the 360 Late Models and was closely followed by 2006 Russ Prentice Memorial winner Jon Rivers. Rivers seemed to be really hooked in the early stages of the practice as he gave people a real good view of his under carriage many times as he carried his left front wheel coming off the turns. Rivers would later retire to the pits halfway through a practice session and never returned to the speedway for the last two practice sessions.
Troyer Race Cars Sportsman division driver Rob Pratt had the speedway pretty locked down and was turning in consistent lap times with Jeff McGinnis following his pace. Ricky Newton battled some engine issues in the early stages of practice. The crew worked to rectify the problem and Newton would return to the speedway with his problems fixed. The Troyer Race Cars Sportsman division shows a lot of promise for the 2007 season with a great showing of cars for the first practice. A few racers that were on hand without their cars confirmed that their cars weren’t ready but will be ready for the next practice session on April 22. According to the DIRT Motorsports statistics, Genesee Speedway averaged twelve sportsman cars each race last season. The first practice date brought out 13 cars and it is known the there was seven Genesee sportsman regulars that could not make yesterdays practice.
The Bobcat of Buffalo Street Stocks and the Dickenson’s Auto Service Mini Stocks had rather low car counts for the first practice but the racers that did show looked fast and looked ready to do battle this year. Russ Wassner was the fastest mini-stock on hand. Mini Stock division Sponsor Bobby Dickenson, who looked fast in his first practice session, suffered a mechanical failure later in the day after a new water pump broke and sent the fan and pulley off of his Mustang Mini Stock.
The only disappointment was the lack of support for the Greenlief’s Restaurant Pro-Stock’s. Not a single Pro-Stock passed through the gate for practice or for technical inspection.
The fans were treated to a couple of extra special treats as
ASCS Patriot Region sprint regular Jared Zimbardi and Southern Ontario Sprint regular Jim Porter were on hand to run practice laps with their 360 sprint cars. Zimbardi turned in a low 16 second lap time with a car that he was having troubles with. Next week will show what the sprints really have when the ASCS Patriot Region sprints have an open practice date at Genesee Speedway. We will surely see a mid fifteen second or faster lap for sure.
The other treat was the 600cc micro sprint of Jim Radney. Radney’s 636 Kawasaki powered Hyper chassis was a little off pace in the first practice session as he was over geared, but really showed his cards in the second practice as he laid down a low 17 second lap.
Next up for Genesee Speedway will be the Batavia Mall Show starting April 19th and finishing up on April 21st and Genesee Speedway’s second and final practice date on April 22nd.
Be sure not to miss the practice date on April 22nd as it is the Genesee Speedway Media Day and the ASCS Patriot Region Sprint Cars will be holding a special test and tune. The Clor’s Chicken BBQ will also be returning for the final practice session.
THANKS TO BILL BALL FOR HIS WELDING HELP.
THANKS TO RICK NEWTON'S AG & TOW MOTOR SERVICE
FOR WORKING ON OUR LIGHT TOWER GENERATOR

Genesee Speedway releases 2007 Racing Schedule.
Batavia, NY—Mar 3, 2007--By: Chris Rhynold, Media/Racer Relations Director
Genesee Speedway is proud to announce they have released their racing schedule for the 2007 racing season.
The BRP Can-Am Super Stocks are back on the card after it was thought that Genesee Speedway wasn’t going to get an event on the schedule due to the uncertainty of what was happening at the speedway this year.
The Lucas Oil Shoot-Out for the 358 and Sportsman divisions will be returning in 2007 with the opportunity of Genesee Speedway gaining a special Lucas Oil race if a Genesee Speedway Sportsman regular can rise to the top.
Specials to the schedule this year will be the return of the 360 Sprint Cars that haven’t raced at the Genesee County track since the early 1990’s and the addition of the Regional International Pro Truck Series.
On the down side, we regret to inform race fans and racers that Genesee Speedway will not be hosting a DIRT Sportsman or DIRT Pro-Stock Tour race this season. Although we still remain DIRT Sanctioned it was much like the BRP Can-Am Super Stocks, the schedules were set before the certainty of what was happening at the speedway could be resolved. However, we can assure that we are already working on getting both tours back for the 2008 racing season.
In addition, Genesee Speedway still has nights open for nightly sponsors. Contact Chris Rhynold at geneseespeedway@cogeco.ca or Mike Lauterborn at mike@sprint41.com if you are interested in sponsoring a night.
Genesee Speedway meet and greet a great success.
Batavia, NY—Feb. 12, 2007--By: Chris Rhynold, Media/Racer Relations Director
The Batavia Party House was packed with racers and their teams for the first meeting with the new staff of Genesee Speedway. 200 plus were in attendance to hear about the changes, upgrades and the status of the speedway. Rich Vleck who is one of the announcing team from Genesee Speedway and the emcee for the event, started the meeting off by introducing Mike Lauterborn to the full house.
“We would like to thank all of you that have come out for today’s meeting. It is great to see that you are all coming out to support us” stated Lauterborn.
Lauterborn then went on and introduced the new staff at Genesee Speedway for the 2007 racing season.
John Veach (Head Starter), Bill Alhart (Race Director), Rich Vleck (Announcer), Mike Paz (Announcer), Chris Rhynold (Media/Racer Relations Director), Don Marsceill (Track Prep), Jeff Anstett (Pit Steward), Mike Lane (Back-Stretch Flagman), Roy Amedick (Infield Director), Joe Steinwachs (Security), Ron McLaud (Tech Inspector) and others to name a few.
Lauterborn, talked with racers about changes that need to be made at the speedway and informed the teams and racers at just how close they were to losing the facility they race at. Issues such as the addition of mufflers that will be mandatory to all classes was addressed and tire resolutions for the Super Stocks. The Super Stocks will be given a 3 week grace period to burn off any “0” tires they have. After the 3 week period the Super Stocks will be required to run a “1” tire. Lauterborn also axed the $5 dollar charge for cars at the back gate, which received a round of applause from the racers. Lauterborn also informed the racers that the big tires from the corners will also be removed from the infield.
“We are looking to make a lot of improvements at the track. Our goal is to make Genesee Speedway a premier facility” stated Lauterborn.
Jeff Anstett then took the microphone to address some procedural issues and Rich Vleck discussed the doing away of the handicap system and introduced the new draw system that will set the heats and features.
Billy Colton of Troyer Race Cars informed the room full of racers of how lucky they are that Mike Lauterborn has taken over the position as promoter at Genesee Speedway and has supplied Genesee Speedway with a brand new 2006 Troyer Chassis to be raffled off at the end of the season. More info on the raffle will be addressed at a later date. Colton also announced that Troyer Race Cars will be holding seminars at the track. More info on the seminars will be released when they are finalized.
As an added bonus to the racers, Bob Mullen and East Coast Speed donated trophies for the top 5 finishers in each class from the 2006 points season.
At the end of the meeting the staff entertained questions and suggestions from the racers, which supplied the staff with valuable information to help make the 2007 season successful. Genesee Speedway also secured a sponsor for the Super Stock division and added 2 night sponsors on the schedule.
With the attendance that was drawn to the meeting and the response the staff received from the racers, 2007 looks to be the turn around season for Genesee Speedway and we look very forward to seeing all the racers at the track this season. With out the racers there is no Genesee Speedway.
Genesee Speedway appoints new media and racer relations director.
Batavia, NY-Jan. 15, 2007--By: Chris Rhynold, Media/Racer Relations Director
Mike Lauterborn and Genesee Speedway added another piece to the puzzle today by appointing a familiar face to the media and racer relation’s position at the speedway for the 2007 season.
After coming off four seasons as a sprint car crew chief, Chris Rhynold has been appointed as the Media and Racer Relations Director. Chris is also the sprint car racing editor for Dirt Track Digest and brings many things to the table. With many years dealing with the press and being a media member himself he knows what the fans and racers want to read about.
Chris has been involved with all aspects of the sport since an early age, from the Saturday Night Warriors right to the Professional ranks. This will mark the first time that he has been on this side of the fence in motorsports.
“I am really excited to be in this position with the speedway. Mike has been a good friend of mine since I got involved with sprint car racing and when he approached me with this position, I could do nothing but except.” stated Rhynold.
“I will be working with many faces I have worked with over the past few years and to be working with Mike Lauterborn again, and John Veach, Jeff Anstett, Mike Paz and Rich Vleck, its going to be an exciting year. These guys are a really great bunch and to be working along side of them is going to be an honor.” stated Rhynold.
When you see Chris cruising the pits, be sure to say hello, and feed him with information about your team. This guy is your ticket to get exposure and to let the fans know more about your racing efforts.
Genesee Speedway’s 2007 season will get under way with practice dates on April 14th and 22nd and the 2007 Points Season will be the season opener on April 28th.
Genesee Speedway also will be hosting an open 360 sprint car race (Yet to be Named) on August 25th that will see the heavy hitters from the American Sprint Car Series Patriots and the Empire Super Sprints. This will be a show you shouldn’t miss.
